It follows Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham, whose long-running rivalry reaches its peak. The same location was used to portray Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC television adaptation of Poldark. There was an appalling version of Riders by Jilly Cooper in the 90s, since then television has shunned her ‘bonkbusters’; critics felt that Jilly Cooper’s novels were dated and silly.

This is far from the truth, Cooper satirises the upper middle class of the Cotswolds with an iron wit and has always understood comedy, characters and entertaining plots. In many ways her work was more like a Restoration comedy than Carry On, with characters having more development and inner lives than you would expect. Now from Disney comes RIVALS with a star-studded cast and the good news is that the film is a sight to behold.

He does a really commendable job

Its triumph, however, is that it has the budget and time to do justice to the feel and spirit of the original book. The changes are minor and actually reveal the period and politics more clearly. Bella Maclean is brilliant in the central role of Tagie and Alex Hassel is great as Rupert, a role that is impossible to cast as no one in the story can be the character Cooper created — part villain, part hunk, part whimpering child.

Really enjoyed it

The real star, however, is the ensemble of great character actors Emily Atack, Danny Dyer and Katherine Parkinson, all of whom give career-best performances. The 80s soundtrack is perfect throughout, making Rivals a real triumph for Disney. It’s fun, it’s frothy, but there’s a deeper undercurrent that elevates it above a Hallmark movie and gives hope that we’ll see a lot more of this team and this universe in the future.
